Review of 'Red Cartoons: Animated Films from East Germany,' a single-disc collection of short films produced by the East Germany DEFA Studio for Animation Film from 1974-1990. The variety of style and narrative approach is wide open, and the animators' use of irony pervades various items of social commentary directed by Klaus Georgi, Hans Moser, Otto Sacher, and others. 'Red Cartoons' is a nice little collection, but is woefully incapable of representing one studio's thirty-five plus year history.
